{November 9, 2012}   Times Have Changed

When I was growing up, the common belief was that children were the property of their parents; society assumed that parents would always keep the child’s best interest in mind in decisions on child-rearing, and that discipline of children should be the sole discretion of parents. This societal attitude contributed to a great deal of hidden child abuse, and shamed abused children into silence. But today, another belief has taken hold–that parents have a responsibility to raise children in a humane way, without inflicting unreasonable violence and neglect upon the child, no matter what the parent’s philosophy on child rearing is. We’ve become a better society since this shift in attitudes took hold, and parents who abuse their children–those who starve, beat, or otherwise brutalize their children–will now serve long prison sentences as a result.

Here is a local case of child abuse in Georgia (Paulding County.) Forty years ago, these parents would have walked free. But times have changed, and we are better people for it today.
